‘You gotta go get your money’ – Kendrick Perkins’ advice for Kemba Walker in free agency | The Jump

Published

on

Rachel Nichols, Byron Scott and Kendrick Perkins discuss the future of Charlotte Hornets guard Kemba Walker after he was named to the 2019 All-NBA third team, making him eligible for a supermax contract if he stays in North Carolina rather than taking offers from the Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks or other teams.

I guess basketball’s all about the money now. I’m all for athletes getting paid. What they do is both hugely difficult and insanely entertaining. They deserve their millions. But $221 million? Nah. That’s ridiculous. Perkins is over here talking about “getting his money” and “securing his family”. Kemba’s already done that. He’s already made his millions. And he deserves a lot more. Not $221 million though. Same with Harden. Same with Westbrook. Shit same with LeBron. All those guys are grossly overpaid. At this point these guys have so much money they probably don’t even give a shit about winning. When they lose a playoff series sure they’re sad for a couple of days but then they realize they can just go drive their Lambos and ride their yachts and play Xbox in their mansions and so on. In the nineties when someone lost it tore them up inside. They had more than enough money to support themselves but their passion was for the game of basketball not what it do for them financially. Now it’s all about the money.

When you as a player double and triple the worth of an owners business(Bron&Cleveland Owner) you not overpaid within that career field. It’s aalllootttaaa guys overpaid but guys like Bron,Kobe,MJ,Shaq,Magic, etc worth every penny

+Wook 87 I agree. Shaq in his prime was worth every penny. MJ throughout his career was honestly underpaid from an absolute perspective (He only made around $40 million in NBA salary throughout his entire career). Kobe earned it too. And so did LeBron. In Cleveland that is. Today not so much. He’s 34 now. And he’s only getting worse. And the Lakers aren’t a small market team that need a superstar to bring in money. They’re one of the most recognizable sports franchise on Earth. They’d be fine without him. And LeBron’s value has dropped considerably. He couldn’t even lead the Lakers to the playoffs. He plays no defense whatsoever. And he’s not exactly good the team’s morale. Clearly he’s not worth $35 million a year anymore. And Kemba? Certainly nowhere near worth $42 million a year.

If they dont offer the supermax he should leave. If he and his family cant survive from an additional $180M he has bad business managers. Jordan his boss and didnt offer him a signature shoe. Thats a big fuck you if you ask me.

“You gotta secure your family first.” Lmao it’s not like he gonna be broke if he leaves he gonna be making 35M a year more than enough to “secure a family”.

NBA is not like other jobs. You get a small window to make money. After that you’re on your own. Take the money.

If I’m Kemba, I can make up the $80 million in the right market. For example if I join the Lakers I need access to LeBron, Magic, Kobe, the Buss family, and anybody else connected with a circle of wealth network. Help me tap into the networks portfolio, gain access to broadcast deals, and all business related matters to enable my personal portfolio growth. On the surface walking away from $80 million is crazy, but if you have a plan you can more than quadruple the earnings.
