Before the MVPs, before the four championships, there was this night at the Garden. In this episode of “Anatomy of the Game,” Ben Taylor of Thinking Basketball revisits Steph Curry’s 54-point eruption against the Knicks in February 2013—a glimpse of the superstar who would change how basketball is played and defended. Ben breaks down how…

That Klay-to-Steph and vice versa screening is what Steve separates from Mark. There is really no stopping that especially before Klay’s injuries.

I love these videos, and I think LeBron’s Game 7 against Boston in 2008 (and even the way they defended him, which was also brilliant) would make for a great topic

It can’t be said enough how violently allergic coaches were to Curry’s style of play. At every level from Peewees to Pros, taking a 3 point shot in transition was an automatic benching or at least a glare from the coach.

maan, gsw was playing baaad, like to’s for free, hesitation/s like discipline, thinking nyk was gon win, only a few bright spots, the winning culture still hadnt taken place
dray still was not in his triple-couple era
maaan, lbj must be hating the curry era more than the barea era, more than the timmy d era:
nba making videos about curry, about this, about 10 years of the okc game, the HoF making an exhibit about him before they induct him [they’re gon induct him before he retires & they not gon chose lbj on his 1st year of eligibility. watch], people celebrating curry for the 3pt shot & not him for not having no own signature move [wtf is lbj thinking??], everybody doing the sleep celebration, curry having won more on career team contracts than him, nobody sleeping w/his mom, wondering how does he make it staying w/only 1 franchise, thinking how does curry do it w/dray by his side but he left behind ad & bronny & kyrie & luka & brodie & j.r., wondering why curry does not have balcogenesis scandals but he does not either, how curry can make it w/out to’s & flops like he does, how curry does not care about all-time scoring, how curry saved his olympic legacy [his what?] but he lost to puerto rico, how curry did not have to do w/nike going broke but he did, how he made jeanie lose the lakers but curry turned nobody gsw, poverty gsw into a billion-dollar franchise,

If Mark had run more of the offense through Curry that season instead of Lee or Jack, and if Jack’s minutes had been cut to 15–20 in the playoffs while Green’s were increased to 25–30, the Warriors could’ve comfortably made the Finals that year and even won it.

Steve Kerr really was a genius. Mark Jackson loved post ups too much for a team with Curry on it, he’s a criminal.

October 1, 2026 at 12:09 pm
Loved this video! One thing I would like Ben to explore more is the idea of value vs goodness — and it was something that he hinted at when talking about how the Warriors spacing & strategy suppressed the stats of Steph & Klay in 2013
How your teammates & your opponents can impact your statistical output & hence your value.
Like how much of Steph’s excellence in 2016 was (if at all) slightly inflated by teams still employing suboptimal strategy or lineups against him? What if 2021 Steph is a more complete player, he just faced weaker or less advanced defenses in 2016 that made 2016 Steph look like his absolute peak?
I’m not saying one way or the other, I just would like someone to explore the idea (nor am I trying to take away from what Steph did in 2016… he’s my favorite player ever!)

One thing you don’t really mention is the foreshadowing of Draymond’s rise in this game as well. Draymond does several smart things in this video that allows Steph to get out of difficult situations or even score. In scenarios where most bigs would sit and stare or maybe set an offball screen, Draymond cuts into open space where he can turn defensive pressure into an advantage for the Warriors offense. He’s the only player in this game who actually knows how to take advantage of Steph’s gravity.
Also you can see how Draymond’s utility and versatility distinguish him from a Landry or an Ezeli, and how his kind of skillset is necessary to maximize Steph and Klay’s value. Teams that have tried to replicate the Warrior’s offensive scheme aren’t as successful not just because their shooters aren’t as good as the splash brothers, but also because they don’t supplement their shooters with high iq swiss army knife players like Draymond.
@jabbysammich
October 2, 2026 at 4:39 am
I would even suggest that you can look at a star player’s usage rate as a signal of a team’s lack of Draymond-type players. If the star player has an extremely high usage rate, it indicates a heliocentric offense where the star has to do all the scoring AND playmaking. Steph obviously has the ability to facilitate a heliocentric offense, but he doesn’t have to bc of Draymond (or even Iguodala later on) and I am sure his usage rate reflects that.
@leungsz
October 2, 2026 at 1:57 pm
Say what you want about Dray, and the guy can also be frustrating, but his basketball IQ is really high. He was the first guy who figured out how to maximize Steph’s skill set, and that’s why Dray is still on the Warriors.
You can also see the seeds of DPOY in Dray with the way he defends Carmelo 1-on-1 as well as providing help when he’s off-ball.

Watching this as an Indiana Hoosiers fan, it’s comical that Mike Woodson was coaching the Knicks. Then proceeded to never change his defensive coverage the next 10 years 😂
@tellthetruthg
October 2, 2026 at 1:29 pm
No doubt Mark Jackson jump started the GSW run , Kerr has said it himself dozens of times he put down a great foundation, Kerr came in and added the offensive design to finish it
Kerr deserves a lot of credit too. Offensive schemes tailor maid for his team, brought in a great staff , legendary D coach Ron Adams, had Al Attles in the house , and Jerry West, but it all started with Stephen. Never will the NBA see a 6’3 guard scare every player on every team the way Curry does , win as many rings, his highlights would make Pistol Pete jump off the couch. He’s TOP five in my book.
