      May 29, 2020 at 11:18 pm

@Andrew Ortiz Why? I’m just telling you the truth. The Rockets choked in the Western Conference Finals against the Jazz and therefore weren’t good enough to face the Bulls. Just stop imagining stuff and accept the history.

    • Andrew Ortiz

      May 29, 2020 at 11:28 pm

@Fusionn bro you’re stupid everyone knows the rockets lost the whole point of my comment was that they matched up better with the bulls and you keep referring to them losing lol I’ve accepted they lost you’re just stupid and emotional about about me saying the rockets matched up better

John Stockton was Badass. Most people don’t respect the 50-40-90 guys like him & Mark Price. The difference? Price scored in the pick n roll, Stockton passed. All time steals leader too. Strong with that dirty 80’s 90’s defense. You gotta respect him!

    • Eggo Slayer

      May 29, 2020 at 10:30 pm

He was great at everything. One of the best PG defenders ever. One of the best passers ever. He was a top tier shooter. He was tough as nails and would set screens on dudes twice his size and he fouled hard, he didn’t care. He was also capable of taking over games and being the primary scoring at any given moment and I wish that was something people recognized more. He could have averaged 20+ PPG a night but it was more effective for him to be the distributor. He had a good bag of tricks, like he could get to the basket at will, hit pull up jumpers, crossover guys, and spot up shoot. Dude was a super complete player.

    • Yol Geta

      May 29, 2020 at 10:40 pm

@Eggo Slayer you covered it all. So many guards said they had more trouble with Stockton than Jordan…even Gary Peyton! That says a lot.

If it was not because of MJ and the lockout season, the Jazz would have three peated from 97 to 99.

    • AnEn

      May 31, 2020 at 11:45 am

Chris Webber’s hit on Stockton in 1999 also played a role.

As did the lockout schedule you mentioned.

Utah had a uniquely difficult schedule even compared to other teams in that season, as they had to play 19 games in 23 nights just before the playoffs started.

They still finished with the best record, tying with SA (who, it should be noted, had a sub-.500 record with 3-in-3s on their schedule, but didn’t have to play 3 games in 3 nights past, I believe, the first month, leaving them fresh for the playoffs), but this schedule robbed them of the top seed (SA won the tie breaker) and left them burnt out for the playoffs.

They also were facing a difficult task because of the fact that they had played 300 games in the prior 3 seasons.

Western Conference contenders that have played that many games over the last 30 years — playing until at least the conference finals in three straight seasons — have all fallen apart in the fourth year.

This has happened to the 1990-93 Blazers, the 1996-99 Jazz, the 2000-03 Lakers, the 2008-11 Lakers and the 2012-15 Spurs.

I just love watching Stockton play, he’s so smart and always 110%.
And Greg Ostertag played maybe the best game of his career that night !

  44. Melch1Ball

    May 30, 2020 at 5:09 pm

Barkley was clearly a liability gor Houston. He was slow and needed isolation. That way Olajuwon was always out of rythm and couldn’t weigh on the game as usual.

  50. Kelvin Mutai

    May 31, 2020 at 8:34 am

Ostertag made the difference here. Not sure if it was an inadequate scouting report, but Ostertag’s efforts on the boards and in the paint got him a quiet but critical bunch of points.

    • AnEn

      May 31, 2020 at 11:56 am

Ostertag played for his big contract, then fell apart basically forever after.

Malone and Sloan were said to be constantly agitated by Ostertag’s play after the 1997 season.

He did very well against Shaq (bothering him throughout the Semifinals, where ShQ averaged a mere 22 per game) and Olajuwon (at least in this game).

Utah rewarded him in the off-season with a big (at the time) 40 million dollar contract.

He clearly didn’t really care after that.

    • Kelvin Mutai

      May 31, 2020 at 12:22 pm

@AnEn Having just watched The Last Dance, it seems that Pippen was making a bit under half what Ostertag was making when they met in the 1998 Finals 😂. Oh my, life can be quite something.

    • AnEn

      May 31, 2020 at 12:29 pm

@Kelvin Mutai Guys like Stockton, Malone, Jordan and Pippen may have had physical gifts that average NBA players didn’t have, but another major factor was how much more dedicated they were than a player like Ostertag.

He could have been a very good defensive center in the league. But it became clear that he was never going to put the work in to become consistently good, especially after his big payday.

The league is probably littered with guys like him: happy to be good enough to be an NBA player, especially when the first fat contract comes.

The great players tend to be obsessed.
