I wish they didn’t make this hiring about race. This is a job that nobody wanted, the only attraction to the job is that it’s the Lakers, and you get to coach superstars, but LeBron is a 1 year rental right now, and Russ is going to be shipped out at the earliest opportunity. No 1st round picks until 2027. Darvin Ham was the best available candidate because people believe that due to him being an ex player that he might be able to communicate with LeBron, AD, and Russ better than Vogel could, or better than some of the other candidates. What will they say if the Lakers are sub .500 by the all star break?

The players don’t speak up about having black coaches BECAUSE they’re smart enough to know that color doesn’t matter. Pro players don’t listen to coaches anyway.
Hire the most qualified person and that’s it. If you’re hiring for any other reason, you’re in fact being a racist.

Congrats to Coach Ham. I can’t stand the Lakers and therefore won’t be cheering for your success, but kudos on someone new getting a job. Bucks have been killing it for years so you’ve clearly earned this.

terrible take. it’s a reason that tatum, brown, and smart pressed the front office to hire ime. that reason is bigger than basketball.

I’m sure that these people want racism to continue. Who cares what the colour of your skin is. It’s the best person for the job. Colour of your skin doesn’t really come into it. Oh sorry. It’s the USA. My bad.

Kara Lawson and Becky hammon are deserving

I think this is because old former players tend to be coaches. So then most players in the 60s were white so the coaches after a few decades are mostly white. Then in the 70s-80s more black players are getting drafted however it didn’t take those players until late 90s to coach but then from then on Black American coaches became more and more. There has never been a Black American coach to win 3 titles so far. KC Jones and Bill Russell with 2 each.

As a European, I just don’t understand how it is acceptable that skin color is a deciding factor or tie breaker when giving a job to a person, and that it is even applauded.
Taking away something or discrimination based on skin color or similar is obviously a crime against humanity, but the opposite is also obviously bad, right?

  24. AtumRaAmun

    May 31, 2022 at 10:06 am

If it was about hiring the right person, there should have been more black coaches in the league FORTY YEARS AGO. Thats what you folks arguing it isnt about race dont get.

This discussion is being had in 2022…so it’s NOW that opportunities are being given based on resume and not color. And look at the results. Players don’t care about color, but they do care about being coached by someone they can relate to…be it either former player or mentor or big brother type role. These are the coaches having the most success. It’s just a coincidence a good number happen to be black…and front offices are overlooking that last part to make the right decisions they think are best for the team instead of ‘upholding an image’ like ummm…the NFL.
