I remember this… I was living and working in NOLA, and had only one other Laker fan with me to withstand the breakroom naysayers.
The Celtics had a whip that year, too. Everybody was expecting them to trounce the Lakers like they did two years before, but I was rolling with confidence because we were the defending champs, and nobody had repeated since we did it 10 years earlier with the Shaq/Kobe 3-peat team.
Metta turned out to be the unlikely hero with that clutch 3 in Game 7… I won 50 bucks, but the guy couldn’t pay. I really didn’t care about the money…I was just glad we got the Celts back for ’08.
Turns out, that was the last time either team saw an NBA Finals…my, how the mighty have fallen.
