the spurs competed, but again….they lose down the stretch. again, i don’t know what the plan is in san antonio. what is brian wright doing? the spurs spend most of the off season trying to get lamarcus to extend his game to the 3pt line so he can better mesh/compliment with the young players and space the floor a bit. lamarcus did that and it was evident in his play when he was on the floor (i think he should be applauded for that). then the spurs realize the change is not working out. doesn’t it make sense to conclude that the young players on the team need to be pushed forward a little more—-not try to force a players on the back end of his prime to change his style? why are the spurs so desperate to put vets and players who are past their prime in front/ahead of the young guys who they themselves spent 2-3 developing? lamarcus is gone—-now we’re scrambling trying to find pieces to add to the front line (marquisse chriss and giorgi dienge). so how does the decision to waive chimezie metu look now?….not so good. the spurs have always had this thing for vets—signing guys who are (or were) good players, but well past their primes. guys like dominque wilkins, glenn robinson, tracy mccgrady have worn the spurs jersey after years of being great. it’s 2021 and the spurs are still doing it. it’s not necessarily a bad thing. but you can’t keep playing rescue at the expense of the young talent that you already have. not every young player is keldon johnson—who quickly found a way to play his game in the spurs system. some of them need more encouragement. if pop could just invest a little more time in these young guys it would help this team in a big way. the funny thing is—he’s done it before with tony, manu, kawhi—-even dejounte. the spurs have a really good team. it’s fun to watch them night in and night out. that’s good for now. but what does tomorrow/the future look like? nobody seems to know.
