Love Chuck, but he’s wrong here. People took offense because a multimillionaire actor essentially complained about not wanting his movie-star lifestyle downgraded to that of a struggling artist. That’s a fair criticism. However, I think his comments were a teachable moment because the arts have always been a ‘tale of two cities.’ While working artists scrape by, opera houses and ballet companies are largely kept alive by billionaire patronage—the Kochs, the Sacklers, and their ilk. High culture has always relied on wealthy benefactors. Even his girlfriend’s family built a career out of being invited to the Met Gala, which is exactly the kind of patronage that keeps them in the public eye.

Excellently written response and while I agree I think can both can be true. I think people are overreacting, especially due to the timing of his comments, however, I’m hoping he refrains from being so unaware, oblivious, dismissive, or tone deaf regarding the arts.

I really think you over thought this situation, I believe that it was something more involved with his constant humility and him over displaying it, only to negatively speak about a part of the arts that he has been involved with before, not being popular or anything specific to what he said. His comments didn’t fit with the persona of his public appearances over the past year, it was anything but humble, so I think it just made him look disingenuous as a person.

@rho@rhowshad People are overreacting because it’s mostly true. There was outrage when the idea of Diaper Don renaming the Kennedy Center surfaced—and where do you think that idea came from? It came from the Kochs and the Sacklers, who have their names on elite institutions like the Met and various universities because of their donations. That’s why I said it was an opportunity for broader discussion about this and yet it became just an attack on Chalamet.
Dave Chappelle had a great take on this in his SNL monologue after the election. He said that Diaper Don was the first politician to say the ‘quiet part’ out loud by admitting the system is rigged because he personally benefited from it, all while Obama and Hillary were on the sidelines. He basically called their bluff.

If the arts weren’t currently under attack under the Trump administration, people would not have been so angry. Read the room, Timmy.
