That’s crazy. None of those players saw the floor in their freshman year. Jordan was a raw defensive prospect. These guys have skills that those greats wouldn’t develop until years later if ever. If you are judging them against their peers that’s one thing but if you were to put this year class today against that class in ’81 it would be unseemly.
@gtizzle7606
February 1, 2026 at 6:57 pm
wait none of what players saw the floor their freshman year? the class of 81? I just wanna make sure I am reading this correctly.
@TheMontross
February 1, 2026 at 7:32 pm
They didn’t see the floor because there were these things called TALENTED UPPERCLASSMEN back in those days; so freshmen couldn’t just come in and be the star from day one. When Michael Jordan got to school, James Worthy and Sam Perkins were already there. When Ewing got to Georgetown Sleepy Floyd, Erick Smith, and Mike Hancock were there. Those names probably mean nothing to you but Sleepy Floyd played in the league for 13 years and averaged close to 20ppg for Golden State in his prime. He was a senior when Ewing was a freshman and Ewing still put up respectable numbers. St. John’s team was stacked and Mullin still put up 16 points a game as a freshman.
I’m a UNC fan, but by contrast, Caleb Williams came onto a UNC team which had ONE returning starter from the previous year. ONE. Caleb Williams is PHENOMENAL, but imagine if he was a freshman in 2009, like Marvin Williams was. He would be playing behind Tyler Hansbrough and would have been probably the 4th or 5th option on offense, just like Marvin Williams was. I don’t think Caleb is any more talented than Marvin, he just gets more opportunities.
This class is great, but their numbers are inflated by the one and done system and by the transfer portal system. Freshman now can be guaranteed of getting a majority of the shots from day one. If Michael Jordan or Olajuwon or Barkley got those same opportunities, their numbers would be just as gaudy as we’re seeing from this freshman class.

โ@gtizzle7606overstated my point, Ewing was fantastic from the get go.
@TheMontross
February 1, 2026 at 7:40 pm
Also, I assume you mean to say that Ewing was a raw defensive prospect. Jordan nearly averaged a triple double in high school on 28ppg and was coming off of an MVP performance in the McDonald’s game where he dropped 30. Wasn’t a thing raw about him, unless you mean it in the Big Daddy Kane sense.
@gtizzle7606

@samtyson8284 So was Jordan(i am also a longtime heels fan goin back to 77). You should watch clips of his Freshman year.

Thank you so much for discussing this topic because other basketball lifers feel the exact same way. A freshman class that has to be mentioned in addition to y’all will also be the 2008 class that included Derrick Rose, Michael Beasley, Kevin Love, James Harden, Deandre Jordan, Eric Gordon, O.J. Mayo, Jeff Teague and many more

That HS Class of “07” is legendary and also in my opinion the McDonaldโs HS class of “07” is the best

Koa Peat is a 4/5 and is averaging 5.6 rebounds with 4 games of double digit rebounds. Pretty average.
@collectivecore8268
February 1, 2026 at 6:16 pm
Arizona is outrebounding their opponents by 13.0 on the season and is ranked 3rd nationally in rebounds. Peat does not need to be a star rebounder to help his team win.

1979 was pretty special too. It had Ralph Sampson, James Worthy, Isiah Thomas, Dominique Wilkins, Byron Scott, Terry Cummings, Dale Ellis, Thurl Bailey, Jeff Malone, Rodney McCray, etc.

As Freshman I believe this is the best freshman class they didnt even mention Kingston Flemings, if itโs a debate itโs a discussion. Im a basketball for lifer an Ive never seen 18 year olds THIS talented.

What is Wemby doing out there? 3>2
And no, he doesn’t give away his advantage, he couldn’t if he tried because he’s 7’6″ as you mentioned. How would that not be an advantage when shooting 3s over NBA defenders???๐
These old guys were my heroes but they completely miss the point sometimes
Yes, I miss big body Centers like Shaq throwing down in elbow room but it wasn’t effective and it didn’t stick around, sorry. They couldn’t defend a pick and roll to save their lives, man
@williamcarter5049
February 1, 2026 at 8:07 pm
No you don’t get it. With Wemby’s size and touch he has the ability to shoot around 60 percent if hes shooting near the basket. What that will do is draw double teams, get the guy guarding him in foul trouble, put you in position to grab offensive rebounds. Drawing doubles and grabbing offensive rebounds will give your team easier opportunities to make shots. Data shows teams shoot a higher percentage from 3 after an offensive board. If he draws fouls, he puts he team in the penalty quicker which creates more opportunities to get easy baskets. He’s not going to get doubled often by the 3 point line and he’s not going to draw many fouls out there. The hardest thing to do in basketball is shoot the ball, I don’t care how tall you are
@YeeSoest
February 1, 2026 at 9:22 pm
โโ@williamcarter5049if you want to put a guy with his body in the paint to rumble in traffic, that will work fine as you have explained. I doubt it will be sustainable, though, since he’s NOT the traditional big man that role is designed for. He could pack on some muscle and I think he will over time but why reduce the man to a role that doesn’t allow all his talents to shine? Wemby is quick, has high IQ and agility. Boxing out and muscling thru defenses isn’t his game and never will be.
I also doubt teams will keep bringing double teams. They don’t work the same in the vertical anyways so why bother?
You make some really good points to be clear but I don’t want to see Wemby in the Shaq or Drummond role at ALL
@williamcarter5049
February 1, 2026 at 10:05 pm
โ@YeeSoestFair point. He does need to put on muscle and i shouldnt assume hes going to dominate the way shaq did. With that being said, there are no solutions only trade offs. To gain in one area, you lose in another. Its like a running qb. Yes it can be advantageous to have a qb who utilizes his legs but you dont want him to be overreliant on it because you take more hits and you want be as refined in the pocket which will cause you to miss throws that are there. I don’t think any of those old school guys have an issue with Wemby shooting 3s. The problem is when he shoots to many threes because it feels like you’re bailing out the defense. If im guarding wemby and he wants to shoot jumpers, i would feel like i had chance. If he gets near the basket, i would feel hopeless.

So I think most will look at this and see Ewing as the weak link. Granted, most of the people who’ll feel that way were still in diapers or not even alive yet during his peak years.
I’m not gonna overestimate his all-time ranking by any means but the fact of the matter is he averaged 28, 11 and 4 blocks in a time where centers were a prominent part of the game.
He’s AT LEAST averaging 23, 10 and 2 blocks today. To put that into perspective, those are healthy AD numbers. And AD shot threes.
