Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the recipient of the Michael Jordan Trophy as the 2024-25 Kia NBA Most Valuable Player.

Gilgeous-Alexander has been named the Kia NBA MVP for the first time, having finished second in the voting last season and fifth in 2022-23. He becomes the second player from Canada to earn the honor, along with two-time winner Steve Nash (2004-05 and 2005-06). Gilgeous-Alexander is also the third player to win the award with the Thunder, joining Kevin Durant (2013-14) and Russell Westbrook (2016-17).

In the 2024-25 regular season, Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 32.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.4 assists, 1.72 steals and 1.01 blocks in 34.2 minutes in 76 games, setting career highs in points, assists and blocks per game.

A seven-year veteran, Gilgeous-Alexander won the NBA scoring title for the first time. He became the first player to lead the league in games with at least 20 points (75), 30 points (49), 40 points (13) and 50 points (four) in a season since James Harden in 2018-19.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s only regular-season game with fewer than 20 points was an 18-point performance against the San Antonio Spurs on Oct. 30, 2024. He scored at least 20 points in each of his final 72 games, the longest streak at any point in a single season since 1963-64 (when Wilt Chamberlain recorded an 80-game streak and Oscar Robertson had a 76-game streak).

The 6-6 Gilgeous-Alexander shot 51.9% from the field, a career-high 37.5% from three-point range and 89.8% from the free throw line (sixth in the NBA). He made an NBA-leading 601 free throws and a personal-best 163 three-pointers, 68 more threes than his previous career high of 95, set last season.

    Category SGA/FTA Nikola Jokić
*JOKIC LEADS IN EVERY STAT! ALMOST BY DOUBLE! Fta only leads in one because he’s a flopper, points!*
    PPG *32.7* *29.6*
    APG 6.4 *10.2*
    RPG 5.0 *12.7*
    FTA *8.8* *6.4*
    FG% 51.9% *57.6%*
So it’s clear FTA isn’t as needed as Jokic, and is not the MVP in any sense. Adam Silver decided it’ll look better for SGA’s resume for him to win MVP and a Chip, and that Jokic has enough MVP’s.

The Thunder outscore by 17.0 points per 100 possessions with FTA on the floor, vs 5.0 points when he was off.
The Nuggets outscored by 11.1 points per 100 possessions with Jokić on the floor vs 9.5 points when he was off, highlighting an even more substantial impact.

SGA is ahead over Jokic in every advanced metric actually (not counting outdated basketball reference stats). Shai is ahead in eRAPTOR, eRAPTOR WAR, EPM, EWA, LEBRON, LEBRON WAR, MAMBA, Actual DARKO, etc.

The fact that Shai is ahead in this rate stats comfortably (like EPM, LEBRON) DESPITE Jokic playing 7% more minutes means Shai is actually blowing away over Jokic in the advanced stats department.
Oh by the way Shai outplayed Jokic in the playoffs.

    OKC without Shai: -5
    Den without Jokic: -16
    OKC with Shai: +68
    Den with Jokic: -47

Shai had a +23 on/off in the Nuggets series meanwhile Jokic was a -10. Shai also beat him in every advanced metric (not talking about basketball reference outdated stats).

It’s 2025. Stop using basic stats. You are getting clowned on other websites with actual stat majors like RealGM.

Congrats u cherry-picked the WORST and UNRELIABLE advanced metrics out there.
The only advanced metrics that matter is:
      VORP: Jokic 9.8 (1st), SGA 8.9 (2nd)
      BPM: Jokic 13.3 (1st), SGA 11.5 (2nd)
      PER Jokic 32.0 (1st), SGA 30.7 (2nd)
and even regular stats when you take out FT discussion just look at shooting efficiency…
eFG% Jokic is 7th in league with 62.7%. SGA is 40th with 56.9%
