Charlotte Hornets need trade LaMelo Ball this coming off-season & build around Brandon Miller

    • @averiskonsept

      March 26, 2024 at 6:14 am

Nah. Trading him in the first year of his extension is just silly. We’ll never get back what he’s worth on the court. Healthy Lamelo and Mark Williams + a lottery pick puts us back on course. I know we’re taking some big losses again (shout out Atlanta) but I don’t feel we’re that far off a play-in game in terms of talent (provided we continue on an upward trend with our youth). The unfortunate thing is that, due to injury, we haven’t been able to see improvement from our young guys and its hard to even get them on the court together. I’m sure Jeff Peterson will want to see Brandon + Lamelo together before making a decision to build his franchise around them and that’s probably not happening this year. Much easier to play it safe there and focus your attention on the draft and the money Kyle Lowry’s buyout nets you. Bertans also comes off the books for $5 million in the off season and while a chunk of that money goes to Lamelo, there will be some remaining (resigning Miles?) even after adding a rookie on a high wage.

Some fans want to target a guard in the draft like Stephon Castle, Reed Shepard or Ja’Kobe Walter, but I’m more in favor of Cody Williams, Zacc Risacher or Matas Buzelis; I think we need the front court talent more and all of those guys are comfortable with the ball in their hands. I’ve been especially high on Zacc lately; I think Sarr is the favorite to go #1, but I feel Zacc is going #2 and its really close. Unfortunately, Hornets look like 4-6 is their draft range, so I’m leaning Williams then Buzelis.

Its a weird draft this year. I could see someone totally unexpected in the lottery and a few Cam Whitmore’s slipping down the boards irrationally. I would rather have two picks in the late 1st than just one at the top. (For example, you end up with Zack Edey and Terrence Shannon *charges pending* rather than Cody Williams; I don’t think anyone in the fanbase would be sad about snatching up arguably the two best players in the college basketball right now)
