The Last Time the Knicks Reached the NBA Finals (27 Years Later) | NBA Classic
Before the 2026 Knicks ended their 27-year wait to return to the NBA Finals, New York’s unforgettable 1999 playoff run was capped off by a thrilling Game 6 victory over the Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals. Allan Houston scored 32 points while Latrell Sprewell took over late, helping the eighth-seeded Knicks make history and…

That was such a cool Knicks team. I’m not saying great, but fun to watch and clicking at just the right time, just like the Knicks are this year. That run was incredible, especially the first round series against the Heat and Allan Houston’s shot in the final seconds to win the final game and series. And then they had another great Knicks Heat series the next year. Let’s not forget Johnson’s four-point play against the Pacers as another iconic moment too. Unfortunately the Spurs were way too good that year. Hopefully this year’s Knicks will prove to be better and get it done in the Finals. I was there to see them lose a tough series to the Rockets in ’94 and then this pleasant surprise in ’99, but still no Championship. Go Knicks! Do it this year!

33FT for NY, 9 for Indy. That’s the kind of treatment people like to pretend the Thunder get. It was a diffferent world before social media echo chambers.

Shout out to my P.S. 189 8th grade crew from Brooklyn who watched the game with me…and an extra heavy shout out to my mother for ordering chicken wings from the Snyder Chinese spot like we had a luxury suite in the living room. The 90s were truly undefeated.

Knicks back then were hopping on the court in the last 20 seconds because we just couldn’t believe we were going to the 1999 finals. The other day, it was all business. We were meant to win the East this year.

1:25:00 Jalen Brunson’s dad, Rick, cheerleading on the sideline. The Knicks now with Jalen score as many points in a half as those Knicks did in a whole game. Ewing, Johnson, Houston, Sprewell, and the Childs/Ward combo, those guys deserved to get a championship with NY at some point.

What was conincidental was Jordan return from the Bulls twice and New York made the finals and conincident that the Knicks lost to both Texas teams in the nba finals (Rockets in 1994 and Spurs in 1999).

If OKC eventually wins the WCF, the circus will be coming to town. Be prepared NY for the bronsexual bandwagon fanboys and media will hop to your team and cheer you like their life depends on it. From being a “solid” Wemby fan to being a “solid” Brunson fanboy – instantly. Every OKC win is an automatic “refs cheat” for these kids. It’s the trend. Ironic that they never see their king as the veteran flopper.

Notable happenings and facts in a much different NBA in 1999:
– Knicks became only the second #8 seed to defeat a #1 seed
– Knicks played the Spurs in the Finals and they lost 4-1
– Spurs became the first former ABA team to win a championship (the other ABA team to do so was the Nuggets in 2023)
– Spurs were led by Tim Duncan, who was the Finals MVP, and David Robinson
– The teams only played 50 regular season games due to the lockout
– The league only has 29 teams
– Michael Jordan retired on 13 January 1999
– Chicago Bulls was last in the Eastern Conference with a win-loss record of 13-37
– Karl Malone won his second MVP and became the oldest MVP award recipient at 35 years old
– Vince Carter was the Rookie of the Year
– Allen Iverson led the league in scoring with 26.8 PPG – this was a time when the team league average was 91.6 PPG
– Alonzo Mourning won DPOY and led the league in blocks at 3.91 BPG
– Jason Kidd led the league in assists at 10.8 APG
– Chris Webber led the league in rebounds at 13.0 RPG
