Muggsy joins Ben Taylor of Thinking Basketball in our latest episode of “Anatomy of the Game” to reveal how he used timing, angles and his low center of gravity to thrive against much bigger opponents.
Together, they revisit his 18-point, 17-assist, 4-steal performance against the powerful duo of Penny Hardaway, Shaquille O’Neal and the eventual Eastern Conference champion Orlando Magic during the 1994–95 season but also revisit film of memorable matchups against Michael Jordan, Reggie Miller and more.
Muggsy explains how he picked elite ballhandlers’ pockets, held his ground against taller players in the post, deceived defenders with his eyes and attacked driving angles others simply couldn’t access. that’s just the reality of the sport growing over time while the number of players in the league stays the same: the level of play is gonna get higher. a lot of big stiff unskilled bigs back then would struggle to make a d1 team now. mark eaton was a car mechanic. and the average unskilled athletic forward with no bbiq who could fill a roster then wouldnt even make a summer league now

I never got to watch Muggsy as a kid but after watching CP3 for so many years, I find it striking how similar their games looked. I could see the movements and especially on the defensive side of the ball that CP3 had, that incredible savviness when bigger players thought they could abuse them. You have to have a tenacious heart and savy mind to make it at their sizes clearly and seeing the evolution and skills passed down from Muggsy to CP3 so obvious is really cool to see. 😀
