Exactly or not even Broadway Joe when the Jets haven’t sniffed a Super Bowl since.

All three NYC teams won the championship that year. It was an exciting time for the area.

How do they not mention the 69 Mets or even Joe Namath guaranteeing victory when the Jets haven’t been close since.

JJ is a clown. He would probably say Willis would only be the last guy off the bench on almost any NBA team here in 2023. 😯

Stephen A. and Mad Dog forgot to mentioned Joe Namath and his heavy underdog New York Jets winning Super Bowl III over the Baltimore Colts in Jan 1969.

    • AmericanGiant100

      March 22, 2023 at 5:09 pm

Or how about another historical sports upset that shocked the World? The NY Giants and Eli denying the New England Patriots an undefeated season for Brady and company in February 2008 as well.

Would that 70s Knicks team beat any of Bill Russell Champion Celtics teams?

      Absolutely !!!

    • AmericanGiant100

      March 23, 2023 at 12:15 am

No doubt the 1970s Knicks would have won at least 1 playoff series versus the Bill Russell Celtics if they had played at least 2x. The Willis led clubs had one of the great defenses in NBA history. Unlike the 1968-‘72 era West/Wilt led Lakers.

    • watchman on the wall

      March 23, 2023 at 12:45 am

That Knicks team was well balanced and deep off the bench. A list of HOF players from that team. They would have beaten some of those Celtics teams because they could match the Celtics position for position, and they were every bit as smart as those Celtics.

    • watchman on the wall

They neglected to mention the 69 Mets and Jets. All three major teams won the championship in 69.

Willis Reed had one of the greatest stat lines in NBA history with 36 points and 36 rebounds in the 1970 playoffs on April 2nd, 1970 in a win against the Baltimore Bullets in Game 5 of the East Semifinals. The 36 rebounds is a Knicks’ franchise record for the playoffs. Reed is also tied with Harry Gallatin for the Knicks’ regular season franchise record for rebounds with 33.

Reed is one of only three players in NBA/ABA history (other than Wilt and Russell) to record 35+ rebounds in a playoff game. The only other NBA player to do it was Bill Bridges of the Atlanta Hawks in a Game 2 win (ironically against Reed and the Knicks) in the 1971 East Semifinals with 12 points and 36 rebounds. The ABA player who did it was Tom “Trooper” Washington of the Pittsburgh Pipers in the ABA, with 26 points and 35 rebounds (17 offensive, both ABA playoff records) in Game 2 of the 1968 ABA Eastern Division Finals against the Minnesota Muskies on April 6th, 1968

Wilt, Russell, Kareem, Moses Malone, and Reed are the only players in NBA/ABA history to record 30+ points/30+ rebounds in a playoff game. Malone did it as a rookie with the Utah Stars in the 1975 ABA playoffs with 30 points and 32 rebounds (14 offensive) on 13/16 shooting in a Game 3 win against the Denver Nuggets on April 9th, 1975

No NBA player has recorded 30+ rebounds in a playoff game since Wilt last did it with the Lakers on April 19th, 1973 (5 points/30 rebounds/4 assists) against the Warriors in Game 2 of the 1973 WCF, showing just how rare this feat is.

Willis Reed was not ONLY a great athlete, and basketball player, and team captain…
He was a great MAN—and was truly respected and BELOVED by people…. because of what an extraordinarily GOOD man he was.
I know he knew we loved and respected him….but I don’t know if he knew how MUCH….
Thank you Mr. Reed for all your work and care and thrills and smiles, we could not be more proud of you.
And…Lay down that big oversized HEART that you have been carrying around for 80 years, and may God rest your soul.
