My issue with the comment is “I have to show sportsmanship.” Really, showing sportsmanship is a level of maturity that hopefully the children reach. Having them shake hands is the introduction of that. I think there are plenty of examples in society that we now have higher expectations of children than adults. There are so many poor displays of basic decency & respect displayed by adults with no one holding the adults accountable but the hammer is brought down on the youth.
Shaking hands is not an obligation but a show of respect for a fellow competitor & being able to show sportsmanship is what the job is about.
Oh just watch Draymond and like him or not as Draymond stated it a way to win and a way to lose.. look your killer in the eye and say respect., Now the Knicks know that they own they .. I guess going to Duke is something that nothing happening Williams didn’t learn .. he such a loser
Its also about professionalism and is the same reason players shouldn’t dodge or walk off interviews from media. What Wemby did was just plain weak, just another example he had given several already throughout the series.
Can’t have it both ways. Why is it ok for kids to do it, but professionals not too? I agree you shouldn’t have to, I see it more for one on one sports, like boxing or tennis
The key word is professional, and that is what J Will is missing .
Show that you’re a professional and respect your opponents even if you don’t like them.
It’s about respecting the fight that was put up and acknowledging the efforts because no one else can understand the blood, sweat and tears that were invested better than the opponent. Sportsmanship is beyond what level of sport you’re at. It’s about accepting defeat not because you played bad, but because they played better. Even fighters who go into the ring to potentially kill each other show respect at the end.
The USA is full of wusses: stop listening to non-athletes. Shaking hands is important when it is merely competition where no one is compensated: this is their livelihood and income! If your competitor beats you, say a rival semiconductor manufacturer, you do not go and shake their hand, you attempt to destroy them. You simpletons believe that this is a game — it is BIG BUSINESS!

If professional fighters could touch gloves in the middle of a fight or between rounds, basketball players could shake hands.

Even in the park sportsmanship is first . If you are upset , it should be to yourself not to the other players. Respect so you can get respect.
