Victor is still not comfortable being the best player in the series, and the media scrutiny that comes with that professional position, especially in sports. It is one of the toughest jobs on earth, and he has been amazing, considering his age. Mature like a 28yr old, and will only get better with the sports media.
Edit: His lack of immediate responses to the US media is because he is young. As he learns more American English, he will 100% flourish in this market.
