Its fitting that he’s going in as a contributor. He doesn’t have the coaching resume to go in as a coach but what he did for the game of basketball with his coaching style and creating the faster paced game we see today is well deserving of entering in as a contributor.
He wasn’t the first coach to prioritize 3 pointers, small ball, and positionless basketball. Rick Pitino with the 88 Knicks, Don Nelson, & Rick Adelman were the first. With that being said, Dantoni bought a rinkle to those offenses and special touch by letting the point guard generate most of the offense. He should still be a head coach in the NBA. He’ definitely one of the trailblazers of the modern NBA offense.
Mike D’Antoni was a forward thinking and innovative coach. As a Mavs fan, I had such a begrudging respect for him and that “seven seconds or less” Suns team, especially with Steve Nash leading them.
