Shaq keeps going off on the likes of Embiid and others who didn’t perform well in elimination games, and these stats exposed him! He ALSO averaged below his regular stats. Obviously the Lakers wouldn’t have won the 3 championships without him, and used that to denigrate Kobe (who then proceeded to win 2 more without Shaq), but people always conveniently forget that mid-way through the 4th quarter, Phil Jackson would take Shaq out if the game was close, because we all knew what was coming–Hack-a-Shaq time. The most dominating force in basketball was virtually UNPLAYABLE in tight games in the end. In those games, it was give the ball to Kobe and get outta the way (like Jordan). This is why many if not most Lakers fan (including myself) value Kobe over Shaq, and it’s not just because Kobe stayed a Laker for life.
If Shaq just shot a pedestrian 70% in free throws, he probably would’ve averaged 35 or more points easily, and might break top 5 in career points, instead of sitting behind Dirk Nowitzki. Of course, if he had also stayed in shape and work on his game more like Kobe wanted him to, Shaq may be talked of as the GOAT. But it’s Ok, Shaq is more interesting being interested in other things…
