Here is The Athleticâs all-time #11-20. I donât want to rank 1-10 because Kobe fans are always sensitive where he gets ranked.
Itâs funny. I remember when Kobe was in his prime from 2006, some people like Bruce Blitz or Erie Vern would refuse to put him in their top 10. Erie Vern used to be a moderator for the ESPN messageboards back in the 2000s.
Just recently, people were pissed that Barkley was ranked over Kobe. Itâs always Kobe who gets falsely ranked. I think top 10 is where he should be. His fans do overrate him like Mike Tyson. But then the media will sorta underrate him.
The Athleticâs #11-20
11. Hakeem Olajuwon
12. Oscar Robertson
13. Kevin Durant
14. Jerry West
15. Stephen Curry
16. Karl Malone
17. Kevin Garnett
18. Moses Malone
19. Julius Erving
20. David Robinson
ESPNâs #11-20
11. Shaquille OâNeal
12. Kevin Durant
13. Hakeem Olajuwon
14. Julius Erving
15. Moses Malone
16. Stephen Curry
17. Dirk Nowitzki
18. Giannis Antetokounmpo
19. Jerry West
20. Elgin Baylor
Just remember that these top 75 lists were released last year before Steph won a Finals MVP. Things have changed since then. I personally would rank Giannis and JokiÄ higher than David Robinson.
I actually donât care who ranks #2-10,000. I only care about #1 and that should always be Michael Jeffrey Jordan. He was and he is still better than LeBron, Kobe, Steph, and KD, kids. He was like Superman and Batman put together. He was cool. He was charismatic. He never feels corny like LeBron. He didnât ditch cities like Kareem did. Stayed in Chicago to freeze his ass off while Kareem ditched Milwaukee after 6 years.
Donât let the media tell you otherwise itâs LeWOKE. He will never be the GOAT to me or to most people born before 1990. But being #2 isnât bad at all with his 4 âartificialâ rings. Not once did he ever lead a HOMEGROWN, ORGANIC team to a championship.
I know Jerry West went 1-8 in the Finals. Lost all 6 times when he faced the Celtics. But to me, I still regard him as the 3rd greatest SG. Heâs higher than DWade. Donât listen to that douchebag, Mark Jackson. Jerry was sensational in the 1960s. For an SG to shoot 47% in his career especially in the 60s when many would pull up, thatâs exceptional. Most guards arenât that efficient, even the all-stars.
The Athleticâs list is more agreeable for me than ESPNâs. ESPN ranked Kobe #12 before the 2016 season concluded. Then ESPN ranks him #10 in 2022. How did he move 2 spots up? That 60-pt finale? His death? Where Kobe gets ranked always pisses his fans off. I personally feel Kobe should be ranked between #8-10. Barkley actually puts Kobe higher than LeBron the same way Skip does.
You know if Kobe has a documentary like MJ did with The Last Dance or a biopic about him, I personally wouldnât watch it. I donât want to revisit January 26, 2020 all over again. Itâs too painful for me and I rooted against him. Another roadblock is revisiting that rape trial thoroughly. I know he has a doc called The Muse but Iâve never seen it. Iâve never even seen that Whitney Houston film from last year.
Lakers had 3 docs released last year (Magicâs, Jeanieâs, Shaqâs) and I only saw Magicâs. I will continue to watch Winning Time because while itâs nowhere near accurate, itâs kinda hilarious. A Kobe-centric doc or film wouldnât interest me. It doesnât make me feel good knowing what happened to him and 8 other people. Itâs similar to La Bamba or United 93. Or Oliver Stoneâs JFK.
Some people are curiously morbid. Iâm not and I read a lot about dead celebrities like James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Paul Walker, etc. I havenât even finished All Eyez On Me. The movie is generally boring though. I know ESPN wants to talk Lakers all the time especially with LeBron there.
But it surprises me that the only popular Lakers-centric content from last year was a fictional one on HBO. Nobody really watched Magicâs doc on Apple TV or Jeanieâs on Hulu. Just like nobody watches LeBronâs content. But if The Last Dance comes out, people watch. It wins an Emmy. If Air comes out, Oscar buzz. Ranked one of the best films of the year.
When it comes to these all-time rankings, it always leads to where Kobe is ranked. Usually too low according to Lakers Twitter. If JokiÄ repeats next year, heâll jump into the top 15. Might rank higher than KD. Except the only ranking I care about is #1 and it ainât no King but a God/Superman/Batman.
Ricky Bobby: If youâre not first, youâre last.
đ„ Michael Jordan
đ„ LeBron James
đ„ Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Giannis, Curry and Jokic. Good, family men and loyal to their franchises. Hope this trend continues! Itâs extremely satisfying to see (Iâm dreaming way too high right now, but can you imagine Lillard winning next with Portland?).

Even the NBA knows to put LeBronâs name first as he attracts the most viewership and is the best MVP.
