Rachel Nichols catches up with Portland Trail Blazers guard CJ McCollum to talk about not getting shots up during the shutdown, a possible tournament for the 8-seed and what the Western Conference rival Memphis Grizzlies might think about that, the backlash to his comments about younger NBA players living “paycheck-to-paycheck,” having a job as an Abercombie & Fitch store “model,” a photo of him and teammate Damian Lillard as 1970s Blazers, his play during Dame’s injury, and whether he wants his “own team.”

professional athlete is probably the second most useless profession, second only to actor and rapper – the real essential jobs, teachers, police, store workers, garbage collectors, should be the ones getting paid millions
Grant Stevenson
April 29, 2020 at 2:07 pm
pro athletes deserve the money they get because it’s the money they bring in, and those people who do incredibly valuable jobs shouldn’t be getting paid millions because they simply don’t bring that sort of money in.

Really a garbage collector… store worker.. just stop! The reason these athletes make so much is because it’s hard to replace them anybody can replace a garbage or a teacher or a store worker.. and those people working them jobs had opportunities and probably failed to capitalize on em so stop plz

You can say that all you want. If you don’t want them to be paid, dont watch sports. If you’re gonna continue to watch sports, at least understand how basic economics work.

NBA players make $898,000 starting pay per year. At 60% of that is living paycheck to paycheck? Maybe the they need to re-evaluate things

April 29, 2020 at 4:59 pm
@Dawson Mayes he is saying after taxes depending where you are you only get about 60% of the salary. I agree, a lot of players think the check will get bigger and money will keep coming but all it takes is a bad stretch of games and your career will go down let alone 1 injury. money management is important especially when you first get your large bag.

I don’t understand how NBA players don’t invest their money in he stock market and rental properties. I know most players aren’t making Lebron money but the average player can buy an apartment building and collect rent But I guess it more important to own a mansion with a Bentley and lambo.

People have grossly misinterpreted his statement by twisting his words into something they wanted it to mean. He wasn’t anywhere close to comparing none professional athletes to actual professional athletes.
This goes to show that statements like this and others that make them, were out of jealousy and envy.
Professional athletes have every right to speak about themselves and others within their financial bracket as anyone else. And they shouldn’t be accused of being elitists, if they do so.
NBA Athletes as well as other professional athletes have a different standard of living, than non athletes, being their income in significantly more.
I find it to be a racist double standard, when black athletes always speak about anything regarding their finances, they’re scrutinized. Yet, when a white athlete does it, there’s not a peep about them doing it.
This shows that it’s coming from a racist, self serving point of view.
About a month ago, it was Danny green under the fire, when he said some NBA players need to be careful on how they spend their money., because of the season being suspended.
CJ wasn’t comparing himself or his fellow NBA players with Americans that work a 9-5, So stop comparing yourself to a NBA player that plays professional basketball.

Man I hate how everybody is in the comment section saying that these young players are stupid for spending their money the way they do and say that if they had that money they would never do that. I find it funny that probably none of us in here have come into that kind of money in such a short time period yet we want to judge these guys. I feel like you can’t judge a persons spending habits on hindsight because hindsight is always 20/20. Honestly this is when I blame the colleges who make millions off these athletes a year not making sure that these kids are in a financial literacy course so they actually know how to handle the money they’ll be coming into.
